Speed Mentoring Panelist Bios

  • Anne Miller, AICP

    Anne Miller, AICP is the Director of the Colorado Resiliency Office (CRO) in the Department of Local Affairs. The CRO supports local governments in building stronger, safer, and more resilient communities in the face of natural disasters and other major challenges. She has over 25 years of community development experience in the public, private, and non-profit sectors. Anne has worked in Colorado and across the nation to build adaptive and sustainable communities. She has a Master's of Urban Planning and Policy degree from the University of Illinois at Chicago. She is a member of the American Institute of Certified Planners and founding member of the American Planning Association’s Sustainable Communities Division.

  • Dr. Sharon Hausam, Ph.D.

    Dr. Sharon Hausam is the South Central Climate Adaptation Science Center’s Climate Adaptation Planner and Research Scientist. Her professional practice and research focus on climate resilience and adaptation, community-based and collaborative planning, Tribal and Indigenous sovereignty, and climate and environmental justice. Sharon previously served as the Planning Program Manager for the Pueblo of Laguna and as a planner for Pueblo of Sandia. She is also adjunct faculty in the Community and Regional Planning Department at the University of New Mexico. Sharon holds a Bachelor of Science with a double major in Biology and Art, a Master of Environmental Studies, and a Ph.D. in Urban and Regional Planning.

  • Jennifer Rangel

    Jennifer Rangel is the Executive Director at RAYO Planning, an urban planning nonprofit based in Texas that advocates for environmental, housing, and economic justice. Jennifer's primary focus is advancing racial justice. She has co-authored curriculum aimed at developing bilingual, neighborhood-led land use plans for predominantly Black and Brown communities. Additionally, Jennifer played a key role in establishing RAYO's People Powered Planning Academy for Racial Justice, recently awarded the gold level in public outreach by the Texas Chapter of the American Planning Association. Jennifer's upbringing in an immigrant household instilled in her a deep commitment to fighting for inclusive spaces.

  • Shannon L. Roberts, AICP, PMP, LEED BD+C | Senior Urban Designer/Planner

    Shannon Roberts is a leader for Jacobs’ urban design practice. She has extensive experience working on interdisciplinary teams specializing in sustainable design, physical planning, urban design and infrastructure. With nearly 20 years of experience, Shannon’s portfolio includes local, national, and international projects ranging from urban infill projects to large regional and campus master plans.

    As the Partnerships co-chair for the APA’s Sustainable Communities Division, she is responsible for the annual symposium and cultivating partnerships with like-minded institutions to promote sustainable communities. She has been an active member of CREW for nearly a decade.

    Shannon earned a Master of Science in Urban Planning from Columbia University’s Graduate School of Architecture, Planning, and Preservation and a Bachelor of Arts in Art History from the University of Michigan. Shannon is an enrolled member of the Oneida Nation of Wisconsin.

  • Katie Carleo, AICP

    Katie Carleo has over 10 years working in the realms of the built environment. She finds her passion at the intersection of built spaces and the people that experience them. Both a creative soul and a strategic thinker Katie holds a Bachelor of Architecture from the University of New Mexico along with a Master of Architecture and Master of Urban and Regional Planning from the University of Colorado and is accredited by the American Institute of Certified Planners. She has had work published in Architecture Record and Mother Earth News for her collaborative work on the Windcatcher House on the Navajo lands in Utah.

    Katie continues to explore the relationship between people and the environments we inhabit through her embodiment work. Katie is a RYT-500 certified yoga therapist focusing in somatic work; her relatable ways of sharing mindfulness has a special way of making people feel seen and heard while offering loving insight into the mind and heart. Katie allows this unique lens on leadership and our environments to better guide her work and the work she does to support others.

    Katie’s current leadership is in the role of the Acting Assistant Director for the City of Colorado Springs Planning and Community Development Department. Here she fills her days with work supporting a growing city and championing her staff to be mindful leaders in our community. She believes that service to each other is what connects us and why Katie continues her strong efforts as a public servant and compassionate leader.

  • Robert Kerns, AICP

    Rob is the Development Division Chief for the City of Alexandria, Virginia. He is a certified planner with 20+ years of experience working with communities. Sustainability and comprehensive planning are major focuses of Rob’s planning career, emphasizing the latest growth management, urban design, and circulation strategies. To advance sustainable planning he helped found and lead the APA Sustainable Communities Division. He also served as co-chair of the APA Smart Cities and Sustainability Taskforce. In his current role Rob works with many complex, urban development projects - Landmark Mall redevelopment, the Virginia Tech Innovation Campus, and several mixed-use, waterfront projects along the Potomac River in Old Town Alexandria. His position requires negotiating with developers to implement the City’s many progressive planning goals, such as green building, affordable housing, and public art, while working cooperatively with development teams to achieve optimum results.

  • Scott Turner, AICP

    Scott Turner is the Director of Planning for Environmental Partners in Quincy. Massachusetts where he leads the firms planning and stormwater practices. He is a member of the American Institute of Certified Planners, a registered Professional Engineer, and a LEED Accredited Professional in Neighborhood Development. His 30 year career has focused on private development, stormwater planning and design, sustainability, and climate change. He is the past chair of APA's Sustainable Communities Division and was the local host subcommittee chair for the 2021 National Planning Conference. He is the Region 1 Director on the APA Board of Directors.
